Irrigation -
Turning
Desert into
Paradise.....
Since the time of the native
Anasazi tribes, the Salt River which runs through the heart of Phoenix has
had a share of its water diverted into canals and used to water various crops.
Most of the year the entire flow of the Salt River goes into irrigation with a
trickle left to keep Tempe Town Lake filled.
Water makes the desert grow -
just look at these pictures of neighboring properties, all but the last were
taken before the monsoon rains began:

That's a dry irrigation canal on
the lower right.......

And look at the size of this barn
/ workshop !!

Sure doesn't look like desert,
does it ??
How it works:

Here is water flowing down the
canal to the last property on this canal line - there are three open control
gates flooding their pasture.

Another view of the same pasture
being flooded - you can see the water coming in via a white pipe near the top.

Same pasture, with one horse still
eating while the flooding is in progress.

This pasture's mare motel has
become a 'mare island'

And our pasture after receiving
two irrigations in two weeks plus one monsoon rainstorm - happy horses
chomping fresh grass.
With a bit of seed and weekly
irrigation this pasture can be as lush as any of our neighbors.
